As a seeker of understanding and lover of language, I had to find the depth of this word…. HEART. I found no better place to start to gain a better understanding (with my limited knowledge) than the Qu’ran.
The Qu’ran uses more than just one word to describe this ENORMOUS organ, of course its not that big in its physical form BUT is it is a pretty BIG deal. I mean we kind of need. Its pretty enormous in its duties though, in its power, and in its ability to get sick and make YOU sick (or better).
Qalb…
This is one of the most used term in the Qu’ran for the heart. More of a general term but looking a little closer and we find the word Qalb means ‘to turn over’.
TO TURN OVER? for me personally, what a perfect definition of this little ‘pump’. How many times in a day does it go from one state to another, not only spiritually but physically it turns our blood over and replaces it with fresh artery blood full of oxygen. So it returns the opposite of what it got. Hmmm… SUBHAN ALLAH.
When Allah is speaking of diseases of the heart we find the word Qalb used. Have we ever thought perhaps the diseases can also be given some ‘Oxygen’ in the QALB and returned into the body… filling it with health?….
Fu’aad…
There are slight variations in the translation of this word. BUT.. we find the word Fu’aad is from the verb fa’ada meaning burning or a flame. So we understand, in the above verse, the heart of Musa’s mother became over whelmed with emotion (had it not been for Allah, she would have disclosed her secret SUBHAN ALLAH, makes me emotional).
The Qu’ran used the word Fu’aad to describe those times the heart is OVERWHELMED by emotion, whether that be love, happiness, sadness, lust, anxiety, anger or remorse.
The questioning of each of us on the day of reckoning will also be directly linked to these emotions taking over our HEART, what did we do in these circumstances. The word Fu’aad, reminds us of a great ability of our heart but are we ready to understand how to control our emotion? Can we teach our heart?
Sadr
Al-Nisabouri mentions al-sadr as being another word for heart in the Qur’an, the same way that when we say the “breasts of mankind”, we mean their hearts on the most external and shallow level.Allah often uses sadr when speaking about “expanding the breast” of His prophets such as Musa and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
It is the most broadest and general term. It is used Ibn Surah Nas….
الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
The one who whispers in the hearts of Mankind.
It is also the place where secrets are kept, where the devil whispers, and where the ego that commands to evil takes hold of a person, but it should be noted that these influential forces, at least linguistically, have access only to the outermost aspect of the heart, not its inner layers, for which WE, individually are accountable for… Do we try to keep it pure or do we allow it be corrupted time to time?…. But really is it possible for the heart of a believer to ever become impure?
Now,… Lets journey towards find out all the secrets held in the heart,.,,
